Yemen Monitor – Newsroom:

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has warned of an unprecedented deterioration in the situation of journalists in Yemen, stating that the country has become “more dangerous” for journalists than ever before. The organization cited ongoing arrests and violations by all parties to the conflict, particularly the Houthi group and the internationally recognized government.

In its annual report released on the occasion of the 2025 World Press Freedom Index, RSF ranked Yemen 154th out of 180 countries, highlighting a sharp 11-place drop in the security index alone—reflecting a worsening hostile environment for independent journalism.

According to the organization, nine journalists are currently behind bars in Yemen, eight of whom are held hostage by the Houthis, who use the judicial system as “a tool of repression and silencing.”

RSF states that journalists in areas controlled by the Houthis are under constant threat—facing persecution, torture, and unjust sentences.

The organization highlighted the case of journalist Mohammed Al-Meyahi, who has been abducted since September 2024 and is being held in “inhumane” conditions. He was accused of “harming the state’s security and economy” over his writings and was reportedly told to either stop writing or pay a fine of five million Yemeni riyals.

The internationally recognized government was also criticized. RSF noted that the legitimate authorities are also guilty of “similar repressive practices,” citing the cases of journalists Sabri bin Makhashen and Muzahim Bajaber. Yemen’s State Security Prosecution in Hadramout issued arrest warrants for both journalists on June 18, 2025, over their social media posts.

Journalist Muzahim Bajaber, director of the “Al-Ahqaf Media” outlet, was arrested while heading to the city of Mukalla, despite an Interior Ministry order for his release, which argued that the public prosecution has no jurisdiction over press-related cases. However, according to RSF, Hadramout’s governor Mabkhout bin Madi refused to release him.

The report also documented one of the largest journalist abduction campaigns carried out by the Houthis. On May 22, 2025, seven journalists were abducted from their homes in Al-Hudaidah as part of a systematic crackdown on dissenting voices.

Jonathan Dagher, head of RSF’s Middle East desk, stated:

“This alarming surge in arrests reveals the complicity of judicial systems with de facto authorities, using them as instruments of repression instead of being a refuge for justice.”

RSF affirmed that these actions constitute a blatant violation of freedom of expression and the press. It called for the immediate release of all detained journalists, especially Mohammed Al-Meyahi, and firmly rejected any judicial rulings issued by armed groups against media professionals practicing their legitimate work.

The organization concluded its repor
